House Reduction
Renovation of Edwardian semi-D, Dublin
In this Edwardian redbrick on Dublins southside, a direct relationship betwen inside and outdoors space had been compromised by the presence of a bedroom between kitchen and garden.
The design that emerged removed the ground floor bedroom and part of two walls of the kitchen; to create a light filled window room that can merge into the garden. It reduces the building footprint and increases the garden area. The load-bearing corner (that supports two storeys of accommodation overhead) has been rendered invisible using complex structural gymnastics hidden in the depth of roof and ceiling, allowing three configurations of glazed corner.
Sliding doors on the east and north wall can be opened fully to extend the room outward, or singly to temper south and north breezes. Ecological design considerations included solar thermal panels, single leaf thermal insulating honeycomb clay block with lime render and salvaged timber internally.
